Metro gives free rides

Hundreds of people will be invited to take a free trip Dec. 18, 10 days before the Shenzhen Metro opens, the Shenzhen Metro Company said Tuesday.

The trip will take about 30 minutes through 12 stations between Zhuzilin and Shenzhen Luohu Railway Station on line 1. Volunteer passengers will receive specially designed tickets that they can keep as souvenirs.

The treat is part of a promotion organized by the Metro and the Shenzhen Evening News.

The newspaper will send 10 journalists to report comment on the service and organize an essay competition after the trip.

Construction on the subway system started in 2001 with the first phase to open Dec. 28. The total cost of the Shenzhen Metro’s Phase One will be more than 11.5 billion yuan (US$1.4 billion).
