Every 10,000 Chinese urban citizens share 3 communal toilets
In Chinese cities, there were 3.18 communal toilets for every 10,000 citizens in 2003, said Zhang Yue, deputy director of urban construction department of Ministry of Construction said Wednesday in Beijing. Zhang cited the statistic at the on-going fourth World Toilet Summit (WTS) and stressed that communal toilet is the necessary facility but is often neglected. The Chinese urban communal toilets have been moved from the outdoors to indoors and upgraded from composting to flushing, said Zhang. By the end of 2003, 107,949 communal toilets has been constructed in the 660 cities of China. Since 1995, the number has remained 3 communal toilets per 10, 000 urban citizens. In 2003, the number increased to 3.18, said Zhang. In 1987, the Ministry of Construction issued Planning and Design Standard for City Communal Toilets to accelerate city communal toilet construction. The standard shows the interval between two communal toilets on a major busy street should be 300-500 meters, and the interval on an ordinary street should be 750-1,000 meters. Research and development of technology and products of communal toilets will focus on saving water and energy, deodorization and sanitation. Cooperation will be strengthened not only between research institute and enterprises, but also between countries. said Zhang. |
