One of Asia's new megastars, Zhang Ziyi, is paying homage to one of her big sisters in the Chinese-language film industry, saying that she has long idolized Gong Li.

Zhang was promoting her new film "House of Flying Daggers" in an interview with Taiwan's TVBS cable news when she praised Gong, who rose to fame more than a decade ago in arthouse hits like "Red Sorghum" and "Raise the Red Lantern."

"Gong Li is an actress I've idolized and admired since I was little," Zhang said in the interview that aired Tuesday.

"I've finally had an opportunity to perform together with her. I thought this was a great opportunity. She is so beautiful. I just kept staring at her."

Zhang starred with Gong in the recently released "2046," a science-fiction romance about a novelist trying to overcome his memories.

Zhang's role in "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" made her a global star. She's also in the latest Chinese-language box-office hit, "Hero," directed by Zhang Yimou _ who is credited with discovering Zhang and Gong.

"House of Flying Daggers" is competing for the foreign-language prize at February's Academy Awards. Zhang Ziyi plays a ninth-century rebel in a romantic triangle with two men whose love for her leads to tragedy.
