Exhibition venerates de Gaulle

An exhibition chronicling the life of Charles de Gaulle, leader of the free French forces during World War II and first president of the Fifth Republic of France (1959-1969), opened yesterday at Shanghai Library.

Organizers said the event is an important part of the ongoing "The Year of France in China," which commemorates the 40th anniversary of diplomatic ties between the two countries.

"The exhibition is designed to let more Chinese people know about de Gaulle, who - with late Chairman Mao Zedong - established relations between China and France on January 27, 1964," said Huang Qun, vice president of the Shanghai Notary Association, the show's organizer.

The multi-media exhibition provides an overview of the French leader's life, including his role in the fight against Nazi Germany and his years as president.

The de Gaulle life story is told in photos, films, furniture, articles of clothing, a car that took the president-elect to his inauguration and another he was using when assassins tried to end his life.

Visitors will also be able to hear speeches by the statesman. Chinese translations will be provided for some of the material. The free exhibition will run through November 28.
