Labourer uncovers Qing Dynasty shrine relic (China Daily) Updated: 2004-11-11 08:54
An octagonal stone used as a flag base and dating back to the Qing Dynasty
(1644-1911) was unearthed by a construction site labourer to the east of the
capital.
Bearing lotus carvings it has a round hole in its centre. Experts from a
museum in Tongzhou District called in to examine the find, say it was probably
used to hold a flag at a Qing Dynasty shrine. Such items have rarely been
unearthed since 1949, the founding of the People's Republic of China.
The stone has been removed to the museum for further appraisal, reports the
New Beijing News.
