US Election could mark better ties
After a long and bitter race to the White House, the American people have chosen to elect US President George W. Bush for a second term. Bush declared victory against Democrat Senator John Kerry on Wednesday, sketching out a second four-year term agenda. The worldwide attention the event attracted shows that whoever the Americans chose was going to be significant not only to the country itself but to the world at large. And we in China appreciate the Bush administration's determination, in its first term, to build a constructive and mutually-trusting relationship with us. In the past four years, China and the United States, the world's most populous country and the world's sole superpower, have made steady progress to co-operate in various fields, bringing substantial benefits to both countries and playing a positive role in promoting peace and development in the Asia-Pacific region and the rest of the world. The fight against terrorism reflects that a convergence of interests between two nations can serve as a catalyst for a strong rapport. Bilateral ties are now back on a healthy track and have maintained sound momentum since 2001. We look forward to the re-elected US Government and ours working together to promote the development of constructive and co-operative relations between the two Asia-Pacific giants. The two sides are enjoying ever expanding room for co-operation within a complicated and fast-changing international situation. As major trading partners, the two are tightly interwoven in an increasingly globalized economy. Economic interests are the driving force in bilateral relations and a vital element that both sides have to take into consideration when handling bilateral issues. Moreover, the two nations, both permanent members of the United Nations Security Council, have to co-operate beyond the economic sphere. This particular relationship is sure to have a great influence on peace and stability in the Asia-Pacific region and throughout the world. The Chinese Government has many times made it clear that it attaches much importance to developing Sino-US ties and views it from a strategic perspective. Strictly abiding by the principles laid down in the three Sino-US joint communiques is a guarantee of healthy development in bilateral relations. The United States should firmly adhere to the one-China policy and no wrong signals in any form should be sent to enforce "Taiwan independence." The re-election of Bush is expected to ensure the continuity of its China policy in the White House given that the policy will not only benefit the two countries but also bear great significance in safeguarding regional and world peace and stability. |
