Juventus and Lyon are in the 16-team knockout
stage of the
Champions League, joining Chelsea and Inter Milan.
Alessandro Del Piero scored in added
time to give Juventus a 1-0 victory Wednesday at Bayern
Munich. The win kept the Italian team perfect in Group C.
On Tuesday, Chelsea of England beat CSKA Moscow 1-0 in Group H, and
Inter Milan drew 0-0 with Valencia of Spain in Group G of the 32-team
competition. Sixteen teams will advance.
Del Piero, who missed Tuesday's practice because of a slight fever,
pounced on a ball fumbled by
Bayern goalkeeper Oliver Kahn after he failed to hold a shot by Zlatan
Ibrahimovic.
The loss left the German club with six points, three more than Ajax and
Maccabi Tel Aviv. Maccabi upset Ajax 2-1 behind two goals from Baruch
Dago.
Lyon advanced from Group D with two added-time goals from substitute
Nilmar to beat Turkey's Fenerbahce 4-2. The game was tied at 2-2 before
Fenerbahce defender Servet Detin was sent off, leaving the Turkish side a
man short for the last 15 minutes.
In other Wednesday games in Group A, Liverpool beat Deportivo
1-0, and Olympiakos took Monaco 1-0. In Group B, it was Dynamo Kiev 2,
Real Madrid 2, and AS Roma 1, Bayer Leverkusen 1. In Group D, Manchester
United routed Sparta Prague 4-1.
Nine-time European champion Real Madrid rallied from a 2-0 deficit on
goals by Raul and Figo. Madrid, Dynamo and Leverkusen have seven points
apiece in the tight group.
Leverkusen drew 1-1 at Roma behind closed doors. The match was the
first of a two-game ban that prohibits fans from attending Roma's
Champions League games. The sanction was put in place after Swedish
referee Anders Frisk was struck in the head by an object thrown from the
stands in a game against Dynamo on September 15.
Manchester United's Ruud van Nistelrooy had four goals. United improved
to eight points and Sparta has one. Liverpool and Olympiakos have seven
points apiece followed by Monaco (6) and Deportivo (2) in Group A.
Liverpool won after Deportivo defender Jorge
Andrade had an own goal. The Spanish team, last season's semifinalist,
remains in last place and is virtually certain to be eliminated. Gabriel Schurrer gave
Olympiakos the victory over Moncao, the losing finalist last season against
Porto.
