Updated: 2004-10-29 10:20

Nine recent Australian films will screen at the Cathay Theater on Huaihai Road starting November 11 for the ANZ Bank Australian Film Festival.

Australian actress Pia Miranda and cinematographer Christopher Doyle will attend activities during the festival.

Miranda is the heroine of  "Looking for Alibrandi," one of films to be screened. Doyle is popular in China for his work in several films by Hong Kong director Wong Kar-wai.

Films featuring actors such as Sam Neil and  Anthony Lapaglia will also be screened.

Gary Cowan, Australia's deputy consul general in Shanghai, said film was the best way to introduce the "multicultural and social problems" of Australia as well as offering a "different taste" to Hollywood blockbusters.

The Australian government has signed an agreement with Shanghai to hold film festivals in both countries. The first part of the festival will run to November 14 and the second will run from November 19 to 21.
