Julia Roberts and George Clooney are among the nominees for the title of favourite male and female movie star at this year's People's Choice Awards.

Roberts, who is pregnant with twins, has already won nine times. She is up against Nicole Kidman, Julianne Moore, Reese Witherspoon and Charlize Theron.

Nominees for favourite male movie star include Johnny Depp, Tom Hanks, Denzel Washington and Tom Cruise.

Roberts and Clooney will next be seen on screen together in Ocean's Twelve.

The awards, which honour achievements in film, TV and music, are voted for by the American public.

In a change from previous years, Entertainment Weekly recruited a group of 6,000 readers to nominate their favourites from pre-selected candidates in various categories.

The top five in each category then became nominees.

Other categories announced on Tuesday included favourite TV comedy and favourite TV drama.

In the comedy section, Will & Grace fights it out with Arrested Development, Everybody Loves Raymond, That 70s Show and Scrubs.

The drama shortlist includes Alias, The Sopranos, CSI, Gilmore Girls and The OC.

Eminem leads the favourite male singer nominees, in an eclectic shortlist that incorporates Josh Groban, John Mayer, Prince and Usher.

While, in the hotly contested female line-up, Sheryl Crow battles it out with Norah Jones, Alicia Keys, Avril Lavigne and Sarah McLachlan.

Nominees for other categories, including favourite film drama and comedy, will be announced in December.

Final winners will be chosen by online vote at the People's Choice website and announced at a live ceremony on 9 January.
