As an old mining industry city, Huainan in east China's Anhui Province will further transform its economy for a sustainable development in the coming decades, Huainan government officials told web media journalists Saturday.

There are more than 100 mining industry cities in China, and now about 1/3 of them have gone to pot after the mining resources dried up.

Wang Jingning, executive vice major of Huainan city, pointed out that the city should develop other kinds of economy to instead of traditional mining industry. He also said Huainan will follow the examples of several other energy cities like Daqing and Xuzhou which made economy transformation a success.

Economic transformation is one of the biggest problems to the Chinese cities based on the mining and energy industries. Huainan held forum on the development of cities based on the mining industry in 2001, delegates from these cities discussed how to find sustainable ways to develop these cities.

Huainan has built its own economic and technological development area. Foreign companies from South Korea, the United States, Australia and Spain founded factories in the area, and foreign investors have invested US$200 million in Huainan.

Datang Huainan Tianjiaan power plant is one of power plants founded before 1949, and Tianjiaan is the only one that has ability to generate more than 450 million kilowatt electricity every year.
