Man City's Sun Jihai out for season

Sun Jihai's Manchester City future is in severe doubt after he was ruled out for the rest of the season after rupturing the cruciate ligament in his left knee in Saturday's 1-0 Barclays Premiership win over Chelsea.

Sun suffered the injury in the 42nd minute as he attempted to tackle Eidur Gudjohnsen.

The 27-year-old was immediately helped off the field by City's medical staff - and the injury was quickly confirmed, the worst possible news for a player whose present contract runs out next summer.

'He has suffered cruciate and medial ligament damage,' confirmed City manager Kevin Keegan.

'Nobody was at fault. It was just one of those silly injuries you get in football. Nine times out of 10 you just get straight up.

'I really feel for the lad, because his contract is up at the end of the season. I am just hoping the board will show a bit of heart and extend it.'

Short-term, it leaves Keegan's already slender squad in even more difficulty as they look to build on this evening's superb performance when they travel to Newcastle next Sunday.

Joey Barton is out for five weeks following a knee operation, while Claudio Reyna and Trevor Sinclair are also sidelined with hamstring and foot problems respectively.
