Animal tricks (Shanghai Daily) Updated: 2004-10-08 08:54
If you haven't visited the Shanghai Wild Animal Park,
then now might be the time.
Meet the animal stars at the Third National Animal Sports Festival at
the Shanghai Wild Animal Park.
Elephants, leopards, bears and sea lions
are some of the animals which compete in a range of "Olympic" events including
track and field and ball sports.
"The festival is on a very large scale,"
says Su Feilong, an official with the Shanghai Wild Animal Park. "Over 200
animal athletes from 20 provinces in China have signed up for 20
events."
Australian greyhounds, a species noted for short distance
racing, will make their debut in the track contest. Snub-nosed monkeys, a unique
species in China, will showcase their dazzling skills on the balance beam for
the first time. There's also camel racing, long jump for bears and tigers,
elephant basketball, leopard high jump and sea lion aquatic
ballet.
Covering 205 hectares, the Shanghai Wild Animal Park is the first
national wild animal park established by the municipal government and the State
Forestry Administration. It's a home to more than 10,000 animals from all over
the world. If you're into a more underwater experience, head down to the
Shanghai Ocean Aquarium, where valuable creatures from the Yangtze Delta are now
on display.
Over 40 species are on exhibit including the Chinese sucker,
Chinese sturgeon and Chinese alligator.
The aquarium has also recreated
the environment of the Yangtze Delta.
"Tourists will have an amazing
experience here," says Wang Hong, marketing manager of the aquarium. "The goal
of the exhibition is to promote public awareness of environmental protection."
