China widens leading gap in Athens

China's leading position in the medal ranking of Athens Paralympic Games was further strengthened Monday as the country harvested 10 more gold medals on a single day.

China won six of the 16 athletics finals, with Li Chunhua and Zhang Haiyuan setting world records in women's discus throw class F37 and women's long jump class F42, respectively.

Guo Wei grabbed two gold medals, in men's long jump class F36-38 and men's shot put class F35.

Ling Yong from Shanghai became the master of men's pentathlon class P54-58. Wu Chunmiao won women's 100m class T11.

Besides, Fan Liang earned back his gold medal in men's discus throw class F37 held Sunday, after complaints against him by other athletes were ruled invalid.

In swimming, He Junquan and Yin Jianhua added two gold medals to China's medal tally while Xue Lanmei was proved to be the best in women's +70 kg judo event.

China also won the wheelchair fencing men's team foil title.

In overall medal standings, China was followed by Britain (9-6-7), Australia (7-9-9) and Spain (7-9-6).

After dominating the competition day 1 on Monday, with three gold medals in wheelchair fencing, Hong Kong continued to take an incredible lead in the sport, with two more gold medals in women's foil Category A competition. Hong Kong, China now remained 5th in medal table.

In all, 14 sports in eight competition venues and 51 finals in all took place on the third day of the competition schedule.

South Korea won women's R8-50m sport rifle 3x20 - SH1 shooting, winning the first gold medal for the country in the Athens Paralympic Games.

In powerlifting, three gold medals for the day were split by Nigeria, Finland and Iran.

In track cycling, Australia grabbed two golds to its credit and Britain won the remaining gold.
