Car bomb blast in central Baghdad - Police
A car bomb exploded near a police station in central Baghdad on Friday, and a thick column of smoke was seen rising from the east side of the Tigris river, Iraqi police and witnesses said.
Ambulances rushed to the scene and U.S. troops sealed off the area near Rashid Street. The U.S. military said it had no immediate information. There was no immediate word of casualties.
Earlier, clashes erupted in central Baghdad as U.S. troops and Iraqi security forces moved in to a key rebel stronghold on the west bank of the Tigris to flush out insurgents.
During the operation, the U.S. military said two insurgents were shot dead after their explosives-laden car tried to break through a security barrier at around 6.30 a.m.
The explosives were "successfully destroyed," the U.S. military said, in a blast which reverberated across the capital, although there were no American or Iraqi military or civilian casualties.
On Tuesday, a huge car bomb near a police station in central Baghdad killed at least 47 people. |
