Drogba double as Chelsea coast against PSG

Updated: 2004-09-15 09:45

Ivory Coast striker Didier Drogba netted twice to fire last season's semi-finalists Chelsea to a clinical 3-0 victory over hapless Paris St Germain in Champions League Group H on Tuesday.

Defender John Terry headed home a corner on the half-hour before Drogba, who joined Chelsea from PSG's arch-rivals Marseille in the close season, slotted home from close-range just before halftime.

Livewire Drogba sealed the three points and hand coach Jose Mourinho, winner with Porto last season, his first European victory since taking charge of the Premier League side with Chelsea's third 15 minutes from time.

"I'm just happy with the victory and with my goals. They will give me extra confidence," said Drogba.

"We took three points here and that was important in helping us to try and qualify for the next round.

Terry gave Chelsea the start they wanted when he met Frank Lampard's corner to head past goalkeeper Lionel Letizi.

PSG were unable to respond and Chelsea almost added a second on a swift counter-attack when Mateja Kezman, on for injured striker Eidur Gudjonsson, forced Letizi to save.

The PSG keeper was beaten again as the first half drew to a close when Drogba volleyed home, and the same player sealed the points on 75 minutes with a well-struck free kick.

PSG coach Vahid Halilhodzic found it hard to make any excuses for the heavy defeat.

"Tonight I feel ashamed for all the fans who came here," he said. "They deserved something better than what we provided.

"Paris are experiencing some severe troubles at the moment. But I can tell you that we are not dead yet."
