Women's duo make US Open doubles history

 Virginia Ruano Pascual of Spain and Argentina's Paola Suarez made US Open history on Sunday when they beat singles champion Svetlana Kuznetsova and her fellow Russian Elena Likhovtseva 6-4 7-5 to win the women's doubles for the third consecutive year.

 The top seeds collected their third grand slam doubles title of 2004 and their seventh in total, clinching victory after 81 minutes when Suarez put away a forehand volley.

 "When we started this tournament we said, okay, we have to win six matches to be in the final again," Suarez said.

 "I didn't believe we could be in the final again but we did it. It's amazing."

 Had Kuzenetsova and Likhovtseva, the second seeds, won the title they would have secured a sweep for Russian women at the US Open.

 Kuznetsova secured her first grand slam singles title when she defeated comptriot Elena Dementieva in Saturday's final, while Vera Zvonereva teamed with American Bob Bryan to beat Australians Todd Woodbridge and Alicia Molik for the mixed doubles crown.
