kicks off its concert season tonight with an exciting program to celebrate its
125th anniversary year.
Conducted by the orchestra's artistic director Chen Xieyang, tonight's
concert is also part of the worldwide "Akzo Nobel for Young Talent" program, an
internationally renowned scheme offering talented musicians the opportunity to
work with acclaimed orchestras and conductors from all over the world. It is the
second time that Akzo Nobel has presented the program in China after great
success in 1996 when Chinese cellist, Wang Jian collaborated with the Royal
Concertgebouw Orchestra of the Netherlands and conductor Riccardo Chailly in
Shanghai and Beijing.
"The Akzo Nobel program is exactly what I needed
as a young performer,"says the London-based Wang. Seizing the chance this time
is Finnish pianist Antti Siirala, first prize winner of 2003 the Leeds
International Piano Competition and Rumanian cellist Laura Buruiana, winner of
the 2003 Arturo Bonucci Cello Competition in Italy.
Their performances
will include Glinka's overture from "Ruslan and Ludmilla," Dvorak's "Cello
Concerto in B Minor" and "Piano Concerto No. 1 in D Minor" by Brahms. "Having
two of the world's most promising musicians as part of our season kick-off and
anniversary concert is really an exciting thing," says conductor Chen. "We come
with a long history while they represent the fresh blood of music. I believe we
are going to sparkle with really refreshing cooperation." The orchestra's 2004
to 2005 season will run through July 9 and will tour Hong Kong, Taipei, Tokyo
and Osaka.
