A senior Syrian ruling party official said on Thursday that Syria expected China to play a more important role in the Middle East.

Abdullah Alahmar, Assistant Secretary General of the Baath Arab Socialist Party (BASP), made this remark in an interview with Xinhua on the upcoming 3rd International Conference of Asian Political Parties.

"The enhancement of China's role in solving the chronic Middle East problems and crises is considered an enhancement of the peace policy demanded by Syria and China," Alahmar said.

"This will serve their common cause, the cause of world peace, security and cooperation," he added, expressing appreciation over China's just stands on the Mideast issue.

Alahmar said the current situations in the region "are very dangerous" and "tension has risen to a worrying level", which needs international efforts for solution.

Alahmar will head the BASP delegation to the Conference held on Sept. 3 in Beijing.
