The two Greek sprinters who missed drug tests prior to the start of the Athens Olympics today withdrew from the games.

Reigning 200m Olympic champion Kostas Kederis and 100m silver medallist Ekaterini Thanou who, it is alleged, missed four drugs tests announced this morning that they were pulling out.

Kederis said: " With a sense of responsibility and in the national interest I am pulling out of the Olympic games."

He also said that he was no longer going to co-operate with coach Christos Tzekos and pointed out that he had passed drugs tests more than 30 times in the last four years.

He said that Greek officials and Greek sporting federations were to blame for the furore that has surrounded him since he missed a drugs test last Thursday.

The pair left hospital yesterday after treatment for minor injuries sustained shortly after missing the tests, when they claimed to be involved in a motorcycle crash.
