A convicted rapist with a grudge was suspected of murdering eight members of two families with an axe in Northwest China, the Daily Sunshine reported Monday.

The victims belonged to the families of two brothers and ranged in age from 4 to 80.

They were found dead in their homes in Shaanxi Province on Friday night. Police have launched a massive manhunt for the suspect.

The only survivor of the two families was the 19-year-old daughter of one of the brothers. She was at school during the attack.

Police alleged the killing spree was committed by a villager who was jailed for four years between 1999 and 2003 for raping a woman of one of the families.

More than 500 police officers descended on the families’ homes in the village of Mingxing on Friday night, surrounding the house and telling villagers to keep their doors and windows closed for safety.
