Australia backs `one-China' policy on Taiwan
Independence for Taiwan would be a "grave mistake," said visiting Australian Foreign Minister Alexander Downer Monday in Beijing. The Australian Government will firmly stick to the one-China policy on the question of Taiwan, said Downer. He was speaking at a meeting with Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao, according to a foreign ministry spokesman. Wen said China is willing to make joint efforts with Australia to push forward co-operation between the two countries. China and Australia Monday signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to find practical approaches in dealing with climate change and tackling global warming, but at the same time maintaining their economies, Downer and vice-minister of National Development and Reform Commission Liu Jiang agreed. "Based on shared understanding, we two countries can take the lead and co-operate in coping with climate change in the Asian-Pacific region," said Downer. The MOU says the two governments will focus their energy on monitoring climate change, making and implementing policies and looking at new technology to reducing global-warming gas emissions. Liu praised the Australian Government for its co-operative approach with China in the area, despite having different views. "It's an MOU that clearly recognizes the importance of taking action in a way that does not undermine the economies of two countries when tackling climate change," said Liu. |
