Baring the facts as Britain gets first 'Naked News'
Updated: 2004-08-12 16:11

Some British viewers may become more interested in what is going on in the world next week when a satellite television channel shows, for the first time in Britain, the day's news read by naked women.

Presenters of the television programme The Naked News, Lily Kwan (front L) and Sam Page (front R), pose for the cameras at the programme's UK launch in London. The programme, which features a female anchor who disrobes as she reads the news and was launched in the US in 2001, is due to be broadcast from August 16. [Reuters]
"Naked News" will be broadcast at 10:30 pm (2130 GMT) every night from Monday on Get Lucky TV which can be accessed on Sky Digital.

In the show, each of the 12 female anchors begin their segment fully clad before gradually disrobing as they continue to speak.

One of the show's anchors, 27-year-old Lily Kwan, demonstrated the stripping-while-you're-reading technique as photographers snapped her during a central London press conference on Wednesday to launch the show.

Asked whether women would find it degrading, she said: "Fair enough, I recognize some people will feel that way. But I think this is an empowering position. Nudity is okay."

She said there had been a lot of positive feedback from female viewers but added that stripping while reading the news had proved hard at first.

"It required a certain amount of coordination and it was difficult. But I have a great cast to work with."

Samantha Page, 35, will be the first ever British "Naked News" presenter. She has a degree in psychology and zoology and holds a black belt in karate.

"We are not perfect women," she said. "We are normal women and viewers accept that we are no better than they are."

"Naked News" was launched in Canada in 1999 and reaches a potential weekly television audience of 34 million people in the United States. While the British "Naked News" will feature only women, men are anchors in programs in other countries.
