Dacheng's new plant begins operation

China's leading corn-processing company, Dacheng Industrial Group's fifth company started production last Sunday.

The new plant is located in Jinzhou, a coastal city in Northeast China's Liaoning Province.

The plant will be the group's import and export base, says Liu Guilin, senior consultant to the company.

"This plant will also serve as Dacheng Group's distribution hub to link major corn production bases in Northeast China and processing plants in the South," said Wang Guicheng, general manager of the new plant.

The plant will provide semi-manufactured corn products - mainly corn starch - for Dacheng's two plants in Shanghai and Fuzhou.

"Sometimes you can not find ships or trains for transport even if you would pay double the fees," said Zhang Fazheng, manager of Dacheng's Shanghai plant.

The new base will largely relieve transportation worries as it neighbours Jinzhou harbour, one of the few harbours in Northeast China, Zhang said.

And it will import corn from abroad if China faces corn shortages, Wang said.

Construction of the 480-million-yuan (US$58 million) plant began in 2001.

It was jointly funded by Hong Kong-based Global Bio-Chem Technology Group Co Ltd and Changchun's Dacheng Industrial Group.

The plant's annual corn processing capacity is 600,000 tons.

This is the second plant of the Dacheng Industrial Group to become operational in the past 10 months.

A corn-processing plant in Dehui, Jilin Province, began operation last October, with an annual corn-processing capacity of 6 million tons.

The other four are in Changchun, Dehui, Shanghai and Fuzhou.

Dacheng Industrial Group, based in Changhcun, capital of Northeast China's Jilin Province, has grown into a leading corn-processing company both at home and abroad in eight years.

The group's production of lysine, one of its key products, ranks first in the world.

Last year, its output value reached 5.3 billion yuan (US$ 640 million).
