FedEx's joint venture in China has established a branch in Kunshan in the eastern province of Jiangsu to meet the increasing import, export and express courier demand in the area.

Federal Express-Da Tian's new branch, which falls under FedEx's Chinese expansion plan, came on-line late last week.

"We are planning to open seven to eight such new branches in China by the end of the year and are hoping to expand our service to 100 more cities in the next five years," said Eddy Chan, vice-president of FedEx in China.

The Kunshan branch is the nearest to Shanghai among all of Fedex's 10-plus similar facilities in East China.

The 1,575-square-metre branch, located in the Wusongjiang Development Zone in Yushan Town of Kunshan, has 13 delivery vans and more than 25 employees, who are capable of transporting 1,000 items each hour.

The branch will cover Kunshan and nearby Taicang and Changshu. All goods are sent to Shanghai Pudong Airport, linking them to FedEx's international express courier service network.

"With its fast economic development, Kunshan is now playing an increasingly important role in the Yangtze Delta," said Chan.

Kunshan is home to more than 2,300 foreign-invested companies from 54 countries and regions, and boasts daily exports worth more than US$10 million.

Latest statistics show that FedEx's Chinese business volume has grown by 50 per cent in the 2003-04 fiscal year.
