Namibian president visits China
President Hu Jintao and visiting Namibian President Sam Nujoma consolidated friendship between the two countries yesterday during talks in Beijing. Both agreed the two nations should upgrade their relations by expanding political, economic, trade, cultural and educational exchanges. At an earlier seminar on China-Namibia economic ties and trade in Beijing Tuesday, Nujoma said the five members of the Southern African Customs Union (SACU), including Namibia, will negotiate with China for a free trade agreement in a bid to facilitate commodity and service trade. He said the Namibian Government encourages Chinese companies to explore and develop co-operative projects in the country in high-value added fields such as food processing, mine refining, cement producing, medicine, furniture and garment manufacturing. Yu Ping, vice-chairman of the China Council for the Promotion Of International Trade and vice-president of the China Chamber of International Commerce, also said at the seminar there is great potential for China and Namibia to develop bilateral trade and investment. The Southern African Customs Union (SACU) was established in December 1969, with South Africa, Botswana, Namibia, Lesotho andSwaziland as members. |
