About 5 percent of Shanghai university students suffer from psychological problem in some forms, according to a recent report by a local psychological consulting association of Higher Learning.

The association surveyed nearly 30,000 students in 10 local universities about their mental health condition.

The survey began in April, shortly after the country was shocked by the case of Ma Jiajue, a student at Yunnan University who murdered four of his classmates in February.

The report indicated that 5 percent of the city's 380,000 university students need special attention, including 1 to 2 percent who should receive preventive psychological help and 0.1 to 0.3 percent who need professional medical treatment.

Depression, pessimism and violence were the three major problems among local university,  studentsthe report said.

"The deep reforms over the past two decades greatly challenged the country's traditional ideas. That is sure to trigger various mental problems among youngsters," said Chen Zentang of the association.

He added that the results of this survey differed greatly from similar research conducted in the mid 1980s.

The report suggested that students nowadays are almost twice as active and get excited much easier than their counterparts two decades ago. However, their perseverance has also declined accordingly.

"That implies modern students tend to take up things on impulse but embrace less patience and responsibility in accomplishing tasks," said Zhang Hanshi, an analyst at the Shanghai Dofo Psychological Consulting Center.
