Israeli forces shot dead two Palestinian militants in a gun battle in the West Bank city of Nablus on Tuesday during which a soldier was also killed, security sources said.

In a separate incident in the city, witnesses and medics said an Israeli helicopter gunship struck a home with a missile, killing a Palestinian academic and his 16-year-old son.

The Israeli army had no immediate comment on the reported air strike, but said it lost an officer during an exchange of fire with Palestinian gunmen in Nablus's Ein Beit-Ilma refugee camp, a hotbed of militants waging a 3 1/2-year-old uprising.

According to Palestinian security sources, the Israelis had targeted two wanted men from the militant Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, who were both killed.

Three soldiers were wounded in the exchange for fire, the army said.
