Fujian SCi-tech Fair closes with deals worth US$5.04b

The 2004 China Fujian Sci-tech Achievement Fair, the second of its kind, produced more link-ups of sci-tech achievements projects and proved to be a very successful event, said official sources.

The three-day fair, held June 18-20 in Fuzhou, capital of the coastal province, successfully linked up 2,942 projects which involve a total investment of 41.74 billion yuan (US$5.04 billion), an increase of 41 percent over the record of last year's fair, according to officials with the Fujian Provincial Development and Reform Commission, which initiated the fair last year.


The fair achieved the following:

First of all, many projects will be put into production as a result of the fair.

Among the link-up projects, 765 projects secured contracts, while 1,519 projects produced agreements.

Secondly, many enterprises' technological demands were met. The link-up of technological demands was thrust into the limelight since many higher-learning and research institutes were greatly interested in the demands.

Altogether 658 demands found research partners, registering an increase of 167.5 percent and involving a total investment of 8.81 billion yuan (US$1.06 billion). Among them, 167 resulted in contracts and 491 in agreements.

Thirdly, many were large new- and high-technology projects. Among the total link-up there were 186 such projects, each involving an investment of more than 50 million yuan (US$6.04 million) -- an increase of 55 million over last year.

There were 48 projects, each with an investment of more than 100 million yuan (US$12.07 million).

Also, many projects in major industries were included at the fair: 805 projects in three major industries realized link-ups, accounting for one-third of the total projects ending in contracts or agreements.

Lastly, there were more fair participants. A large number of representatives from universities and colleges, scientific research institutes and enterprises in and outside of China attended the event.

Among them were 26 academicians from the Chinese Academy of Science and the Chinese Academy of Engineering, and 115 overseas representatives.
