Cook the books

Cook the books是一个固定短语，它的意思是“做假帐”(stealing money by making changes in the accounts)。提起cook这个词，你首先想到的一定是“烹饪、做饭”，早在14世纪，cook就有了这样的含义，它源自拉丁语。

也许是因为烹饪和人们的生活太密切了，cook延伸出很多意思，包括“伪造”，它的这种意思至少也要追溯到17世纪早期。

如果你认为cooking the books 是最近流行起来的词汇，那你就错了。早在1751年，英国小说家斯摩莱特就在他的小说《The Adventure of Peregrine Pickle》里写到Some falsified printed accounts, artfully cooked up, on purpose to mislead and deceive.这句话里出现的cook up 就是“伪造”的意思。
