Hi-tech firm in Hangzhou ready for 3G business
UTStarcom, the Nasdaq-listed telecom and broadband equipment manufacturer, will launch its 3G (third generation) business in China as long as it receives 3G license from Chinese authorities, according to a senior executive of the company's outlet in Hangzhou, eastern China's Zhejiang Province June 08, 2004.
UTStarcom is now among a few providers of 3G mobile systems (both W-CDMA and TD-CDMA) with end-to-end solutions, said Wang Qian, vice-president of UTStarcom Communication Ltd Co. "Once we are allowed to enter the market, the game will start," he said.
"Given that the 3G technologies are growing more and more maturely, I believe we will be very competitive in the near future," Wang predicted.
Established in 1995 by several overseas Chinese students, the California-based company is the top wireless access equipment provider in the world. Its outlet in Hangzhou has the largest research and development (R&D) center in China.
UTStarcom's dominant product, Little Smart (or Xiaolingtong, a handset based on PAS system which charges less fees than GSM networks), has already achieved a great success in China. The number of Little Smart users has reached 50 million.
In June 2003, UTStarcom ranked No 33 on the list of "the fastest-growing enterprises" by Business Weekly of the United States.
