Ningbo Port is one of China's deep-water ports, enjoying unique natural conditions. Surrounded by Zhoushan Islands, the port area is sheltered from the strong wind and waves.

In 2001 the port handled 100 million tons of cargo, becoming one of the few ports with 100 million tons of cargo throughput.

Chen Linghong, chairman of the port authority, said the cargo throughput of Ningbo Port in 2004 is expected to reach over 200 million tons.

The port is also the largest of China for crude oil transshipment with the largest crude oil berth of 250, 000 tonnage. And, it is the largest base for the transfer of liquid chemical products in China.

The biggest advantage of Ningbo Port is its location. It owns unimpeded land and water transport. It is surrounded by expressways, railways and air routes.

Chen said that by 2007, the port will take become an international shipping center.
