China's central government has given green light to a strategic blueprint on building the coastal area in Zhejiang Province into an advanced manufacturing workshop, a senior provincial official said June 6, 2004.

Zhejiang Province, eastern China, will build the Hangzhou Bay region into a well-structured, innovational "Golden Industrial Belt" by the end of 2020 in accordance with the blueprint, said Li Weining, vice-director of Development & Reform Committee of Zhejiang Province.

The blueprint, affirmed by a series of evaluation conducted by the Chinese Academy of Sciences, emphasizes the region's predominance in industrial specialization and cooperation and takes full advantage of the fledged transportation network all over the belt area, according to Li.

Zhejiang will explore a new direction of industrial development under the blueprint, said Li, which is expected to integrate the industrialization, urbanization and ecological environment into a harmonious mood.

Zhejiang, neighboring China's finance and business hub Shanghai, is a well-off province famous for its palmy light industry. Prosperous special markets are a major feature of Zhejiang's economy. The Small Commodity Town in Yiwu and Light Textile Town in Shaoxing are the largest special markets in China. Zhejiang also has a fine industrial foundation in machine building, textile, petrochemical, silk, electric power and food industries.
