Students walk away from a drug burn that they lit in Humen, South China's Guangdong Province June 3, 2004. More than 1,000 students from the provinces of Fujian, Guangdong and Taiwan, and the Hong Kong and Macao special administrative regions, participated in the ceremony to mark the 165th anniversary of the Humen Opium Burn. The event, which occurred in 1839, was conducted by Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) officials. It was the first public display of China's determination to stop opium use. The ceremony was the first time that students from the five regions had banded together to destroy drugs. Seized heroin, "ice" and marijuana went up in smoke. [newsphoto]
