Four killed in Paris airport roof collapse

Four people were killed when part of a roof collapsed in a departure lounge at Roissy-Charles de Gaulle international airport near Paris early on Sunday, a fire spokesman said.

"The preliminary toll is four dead," the spokesman said. Rescue workers were searching through the rubble for survivors after tonnes of concrete and metal crashed on to the floor of terminal 2E.

Captain Laurent Vibert, a local fire official, said several tonnes of concrete and metal had fallen in and were now spread across about 30 metres (yards) of the lounge.

LCI, a private television channel, said: "The preliminary toll is four dead and a dozen hurt."

The incident happened at about 7 a.m. (0500 GMT). Firemen and other emergency workers rushed to the scene.

"Part of the roof in the departure lounge of terminal 2E collapsed for unknown reasons," an airport spokesman said.

Terminal 2E was inaugurated in 2003. It is used by national carrier Air France and several other international airlines.
