<B>Abuse</B>: 虐待

最近，美军虐待伊拉克战俘一事被炒得沸沸扬扬，据美联社报道，5月4日，五角大楼就此事举行了新闻发布会，美国防部长拉姆斯菲尔德在会上表示，涉嫌参与虐待战俘的美军玷污了同仁及国家的声誉，必将受到严厉惩处。他还表示将采取一切措施确保类似事件不再发生。外电中有这样的报道：US Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld said he will take "all measures necessary" to ensure that abuse of detainees such as what a Pentagon report says took place at Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq "does not happen again." Abuse既可以作名词也可以作动词，意思是“虐待”，abuse detainees意思就是“虐待战俘”。Abuse还可以解释为“滥用，妄用”，例如：to abuse one’s power（滥用职权）。
