A bus carrying Taiwanese tourists tipped over on a highway in northern Japan on Saturday, injuring all 28 people aboard, at least 4 seriously, officials said.

The accident occurred in the town of Oshamanbe on the northernmost main island of Hokkaido, about 800 kilometers (496 miles) northwest of Tokyo, Oshamambe Fire Department official Hideaki Tsuchida said.

TV networks showed the bus, its windshield shattered, lying on its side on a grassy embankment next to the highway.

Tsuchida said the Japanese bus driver and 27 Taiwanese passengers suffered injuries and were taken to a hospital. Among them, four were seriously hurt, he said, without elaborating.

Hokkaido police spokesman Tetsuya Kiba said the driver was unconscious. Police were investigating the cause.
