"Democracy is the common pursuit of mankind and all countries must earnestly protect the democratic rights of the people." President Hu said this speech to the Australian Parliament in October 2003.

Who could disagree?

The NPC standing committee in its recent decision said:

" ... the final goal will surely be reached as provided for by the Hong Kong Basic Law that the Chief Executive will be elected through universal suffrage ... and all the members of the Legislative Council be elected through universal suffrage."

Who could disagree?

The question of the nature and progress of democracy in all parts of China is a matter for the Chinese people. That's what democracy means. For western governments to somehow force China into its model of democracy, is not merely arrogance, but it can only be counter productive.

I'm with good old President Carter, who works quietly to help democracy take root in the villages.

The political system in China is a matter for the Chinese people.
