Hotels, restaurants account for 8% of GDP (Xinhua) Updated: 2004-04-26 14:58
China currently boasts 3.8 million hotels and restaurants with a total of
28.6 million service personnel in its catering trade, who generate 876.6 billion
yuan (US$106 billion) in sale volumes, making up 8 percent in the country's
gross domestic product (GDP).
An official of the Chinese Restaurants Association told Xinhua that the
catering sector has been playing a salient role in promoting the country's
domestic demand and employment, as well.
China should go all out to develop "green restaurant" concept to provide
customers with a safe, healthy and environment-friendly, the official noted.
Moreover, substantial efforts should be taken to increase the hotels' and
restaurants' capabilities of innovation and their sense of safety and
name-brands and to adopt modern management, according to the
official.
