The New Media, an official magazine from China's Internet media industry, made its debut in Beijing April 20.

The monthly publication, the country's first of its kind, is supported by the News Office of the State Council and is sponsored by the China Foreign Languages Publishing and Distribution Administration.

The New Media is a professional, prestigious and high-quality magazine focusing on the Internet's policy publicity, research, latest development reports and experience exchange.

The magazine's target readers are government administrators, publicists, website owners, investors and frontier researchers.

Cai Mingzhao, deputy director of the news office; He Qingyuan, president of Nokia (China) Investment Co Ltd; and Hu Changchao, acting chief representative of the World Bank Resident Mission in China, all made an address at the inaugural ceremony.

Leading officials from key media websites, news portals, information technology companies and investment companies attended the event.

There are about 80 million netizens in China -- a drastic jump from the 620,000 users recorded in 1997 -- according to the China Internet Network Information Center's latest report. The country's netizen population surpassed that of Japan, becoming the second largest in the world after the United States. Currently, China has more than 600,000 websites, including 163 certificated news websites.
