Artful Dining
Nervous that all the surrounding art would be matched by pretty dishes with little flavour, our fears were quickly allayed. Fellow dinners were busy digging into their food like starving artists just back from sabbatical. The food in Ninew Taste Garden is definitely more hearty than arty. The choice is extensive and there is a bewildering range of dishes. With one Hunan native as owner and another in the kitchen, there is plenty on the menu, from Cantonese favourites so spicy imports from other regions. The first pleasant surprise was that Nine Taste Garden actually serves ten special dishes, the extra dish belying the rumours that nine tastes alone can satisfy. The optimistically named Happy Family Soup (RMB 58), brimming with mushrooms, pork and fried squid, is sure to help set your family squabbles aside. Try the lamb with soya bean (RMB 38), a tender and could hope for. The menu is in Chinese, but be sure to llok out for the stars and circles on the menu if you are looking to sample - or avoid - the hot chilli dishes. Tofu with Chinese celery (RMB 12), Chinese veg and minced pork (RMB 16), pickled green bean with smoked pork (RMB 26) and a delicious potted auberigine flavoured with garlic and ginger (RMB 18) did not disappoint. The beer duck (RMB 38) put up a staggering battle before finally yielding some of its tasty meat. The Nine Taste Garden deserves a good nine out of ten for a fine dining experience and is well worth the cross-campus trek. Open time: Daily 11am - 3pm, 5 - 9:30pm. |
