Above the salt

宴会上，当我们想要邀请一位贵宾坐上席的时候，可以说Please sit above the salt。Salt（盐）是我们日常生活中最常见，也是不可缺少的一种调味品，很少有人会把盐和“贵宾”联系在一起。
其实，盐在古代是一种贵重的商品。罗马士兵们有专门用来买盐的津贴，后来这种津贴就被称为salary。当我们描述一个没用的人时，我们会用not worth his salt。盐在《圣经》中是“美德和廉洁”的象征，the salt of the earth指“高尚的人”，a covenant of salt的意思是“盟约”。
到了伊丽莎白时代，盐仍然被视为珍品。王公贵族们的餐桌上都摆着一个很大的盐罐，贵宾坐在盐罐的上首（above the salt），而普通客人、穷亲远戚则坐在离盐罐较远的地方（below the salt）。
因此，above the salt就有了“坐上席，受尊重”的意思，而below the salt 的意思正好相反：“坐下席，被小看”。
