Shanghai municipal authorities say that they hope to improve the city's hosting capability by inviting more domestic and overseas investors to participate in the city's development of tourism.

Details of the policies to attract the investors will be worked out within the year, said an official from the municipal tourism committee.

According to the official, there are 340 hotels in the city, of which, 20 are five-star rated and 30 are four-star rated. The averaged occupancy rate in the city's star-rated hotels in the first quarter of the year was over 70 percent.

It is expected that the number of overseas tourist arrivals hosted by the city from January to March would amount to 775,000, keeping the growth rate for the same period of last year or up 10. 7 percent from that of 2002.

However, events such as the upcoming May 1 International Labor Day, plenty of international expositions scheduled to be held in Shanghai, as well as Formula One Rally slated for September will stretch the city's hotels, said the official, who added that the city would construct 40 new hotels this year.

Shanghai has been chosen as the venue for hosting the World Expo in 2010 and some 70 million tourists are expected to visit this oriental metropolis because of the event.
