Officiating at the opening ceremony, Chairman of the Hong Kong Arts Development Council (HKADC) Darwin Chen said the festival covers a broad spectrum of themes, from drama to comedy, and provides a platform for exchange among film professionals from many countries and regions and local and overseas visitors from different walks of life.

As introduced by Chen, this year's festival has launched some new programs, like the revitalization of quaint tradition of outdoor film, viewing by staging screens in the rustic countryside of Lantau Island. Besides, the festival has released a Festival Album for the first time, which features theme songs of films shown in past festivals, added Chen.

Chen also said that, as a huge market, the Chinese mainland fully deserves to host its own international film festival which is bound to get unstinted support from film-makers around the world.

The festival has appointed Leon Lai as ambassador and invited famous film makers including Marco Bellocchio, Ann Hui, Hou Hsiao-hsien and Sabu as jurors of the Firebird Awards for Young Cinema this year. Awarded films will be announced on April 15 at the Awards Gala night, which is one of the highlights of the festival.

The Hong Kong International Film Festival will last from April 6 to April 21.
