The Houston Rockets waived forward Charles Oakley, one of the best rebounders in history, on Tuesday.

Oakley had signed the first of two 10-day contracts with the Rockets on March 18, but was waived in order to make room for center Kelvin Cato, who was activated from the injured list after missing 10 games with a left shoulder sprain.

The 40-year-old Oakley was reunited with coach Jeff Van Gundy, for whom he played with the New York Knicks, and averaged 1.3 points and 0.7 rebounds in seven games in his return to the NBA. He had last played in 2002-03 for the Wizards.

An 18-year veteran, Oakley ranks 17th all-time with 12,205 rebounds, also playing with Chicago, Toronto and Washington. The 6-9, 248-pounder has ranked among the NBA's top 10 in rebounding five times.

The 6-11 Cato was placed on the IL on March 18. He is averaging 6.1 points, 7.0 rebounds and 1.37 blocks in 65 games this season - his seventh in the NBA. Cato ranks second on the Rockets in both rebounds and blocked shots per game.
