Two-goal Giuly shocks Real Madrid
Monaco shocked nine-times winners Real Madrid 3-1 to reach the Champions League semifinals on 'away goals' and now face English challengers Chelsea.
Real, leading 4-2 from the first leg, went ahead in the first half through Raul. But Monaco staged a stunning fightback to make the final score 5-5 on aggregate. World Footballer Zinedine Zidane had the first chance of the game, but Monaco's Italian goalkeeper Flavio Roma managed to get his hand to the chip from outside the area and palmed the ball to safety. Real eventually took the lead in the 36th minute through Raul, who had a clear shot at goal after being set up by Ronaldo. Monaco grabbed an equalizer in first half injury time when the Madrid defense failed to clear and Giuly's low volley from outside the area was deflected past Iker Cassilas. Three minutes after the restart, Morientes put the French side ahead with a beautiful header that sailed over the keeper. Needing another goal to edge past the visitors, Monaco continued pressing forward and Giuly scored Monaco's third on 66 minutes. Argentinian defender Hugo Ibarra played a low ball into the area and a cheeky back heel by Giuly, who was standing with his back to the goal, gave Cassilas no chance. Madrid thought they had come back into the game with Raul's second goal shortly afterwards, but the referee disallowed the goal after his assistant had ruled the striker to be marginally offside. Substitute Shabani Nonda, who was playing his first Champions League match after coming back from a lengthy injury, nearly put matters beyond Madrid, when he curled the ball past the Madrid defense against the upright. Another substitute, Emmanuel Adebayor, managed to do the same in injury time, but it did not matter as Monaco held on through five minutes of injury time for a fantastic victory. |
