Pires gives Gunners upper hand

Robert Pires scored an important away goal to give Arsenal the upper hand as
they drew the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final tie with 10-man
Chelsea 1-1.

[Reuters] | Claudio Ranieri's men had hopes of a rare win over the Gunners when they took
the lead after 52 minutes.
Jens Lehmann raced out of his goal to clear a long ball from Frank Lampard,
but Eidur Gudjohnsen charged it down and coolly planted the ball in the empty
net from a tight angle on the left edge of the box.
The lead lasted just six minutes, however.

REUTERS | Ashley Cole took advantage of yards of space on the left and delivered a good
cross for Pires, who nipped in ahead of John Terry and planted a header inside
the near post - the first goal Chelsea had conceded in the competition for 559
minutes.
And the Blues must travel to Highbury for the second leg without captain
Marcel Desailly, who saw red after picking up two cautions in the space of three
minutes late on.
