Safe and sound
 英国诗歌和成语中经常押头韵(alliteration),所谓“头韵”是指一连使用两个或更多个以同一字母或同一发音开头的单词。例如:Round the rocks runs the river.

Safe and sound就是一个押头韵的英语成语,意思是“安然无恙”。Sound作形容词用,解释为“完好的,健全的,无恙的,无损的”,例如:The surveyor reported that all the walls were completely sound.(房产检视员报告说所有的墙壁都完好无损。)Safe也有“没有受到损害的、无恙的,平安的”意思,safe和sound这两个词的意思其实有些重叠,不过,人们为了押头韵,也不介意语意重复了。

这个成语在很多场合都适用。

例如:

The fragile china survived the bumpy journey safe and sound.
那批易碎的瓷器经过颠簸的旅途而完好无损。

She was overjoyed when the police restored the child to her safe and sound.
警察把孩子毛发无损的交还给她,使她高兴得不得了。
