Zhang was chosen for her starring roles in internationally known movies such as Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. She followed basketball giant Yao Ming on the top 100 list, which is comprised almost exclusively by actors, actresses and athletes.

Zhang, interviewed by a journalist Tuesday after the news was released, said she had known the ranking one week before and was very happy about it.

“It’s greatly encouraging for me,” she said.

Zhang was unable to appear at Tuesday’s Forbes news conference because she had to work abroad Tuesday.

The news came just a day after the young actress held a press conference to announce the setting up of her official Web site Monday, which was also her 25th birthday.

The Web site, www.helloziyi.com, was launched jointly by the popular portal Sina.com and Zhang. It was the first time Sina has set up a Web site for a mainland star.

Although ranked ahead of other mainland celebrities such as television nymphet Zhao Wei, prominent director Zhang Yimou and film beauty Gong Li, Zhang did not regard herself as superior.

“I’m not qualified (to be No.2... )You cannot say that I’m better than others. I’m still young,” said Zhang.

Zhao Wei is third on the list, Zhang Yimou is No.6, and Gong Li is fifth.

However, the ranking might help her career, especially her development in the United States, said Zhang.

Income in 2003 was the biggest single factor in compiling the list of 100 personalities, while media coverage was also counted.
