China's rural migrant workers totals 99 million

The current number of China's ruralmigrant workers reached 99 million, an increase of five million over the previous year.

Chen Xiwen, deputy director of the office of Central FinancialWork Leading Group, said here Monday that this number of Chinese farmers leaving their lands for cities is still on the rise.

Chen said in 2003, the per capital net income of China's ruralpeople is 2,622 yuan (US$317), 146 yuan more than that of the previous year, an actual increase of 4.3 per cent.

Chen made the announcement in Beijing at a press conference concerning China's rural economy and rural policies.
