Two passenger ferries collided in a river in southern Bangladesh Thursday, killing at least five people, police said, with many more feared still trapped or dead.

"We have recovered five bodies, and rescued nearly 80 injured people, but many could be dead or alive still trapped inside the vessels," one police officer said.

The accident happened nearly 175 miles south of the capital Dhaka, said the officer in the nearby coastal town of Barisal. No other details were immediately available.
